In a major move to bring forth the plight of pigs in factory farms, Animals Australia introduced Lucy, the voice of a three year old child, speaking for pigs.
According to Glenys Oogjes, Executive Director of Animals Australia, the objective is to give the consumers an option to choose informed products and hence use their purchasing power to go against animal cruelty.
Advertisements of Lucy broadcasted on radio called Lucy Speaks and videos over the internet have been able to raise the much needed concern amongst caring consumers.

Every year, around five million pigs, most of them born and bred in factory farms are slaughtered for pork products. Pigs usually are subjected to treatment that would have been considered as a cruelty offence, if it were to be inflicted upon a pet animal.
Some of the horrific practices include, cutting of the piglet’s tail and its teeth without proper medical attention or even providing anaesthetic. Pregnant pigs are caged in what is called sow stall, a metal cage, so small that the piglets have any space to move around. Being caged, piglets are often prone to injuries.
Professor Donald Broom of Cambridge University, an international animal welfare expert, says that a pig’s intelligence is comparable to that of a three year old human child. This fact is what introduces Lucy and her voice to the human world, bringing forth many hidden facts confined within the walls of a factory farm.
Unlike in eggs, which have tagged labels for cage and free-range products, there is no labeling practice for the method of production on pork products. These products are being picked from supermarket shelves and used by consumers who are unaware of its actual method of production.
Lucy ‘s advertisements speak the suffering as seen from the eyes of a three year old , which sounds reasonable when compared to the similar level of intelligence these gentle animal posses. Lucy’s voice urges to bring a halt to the gruesome methods practiced in the Australian pork industry. Caring consumers are a necessity for this and to bring about the much needed change.
